Itanki Sea Cave Expedition –
Walk the Vanishing Shore

Embark on a Once-in-a-Season Coastal Adventure
Discover a hidden side of Noboribetsu on a journey that can only be made during the spring and early-summer big-tide low tides.
Accessible only a few days each month when the sea retreats far enough, this expedition offers an exceptionally rare chance to walk a coastline that most visitors never get to see.

Your route begins at Itanki Beach, home to the famous singing sands.
These volcanic silica-rich grains create a unique “squeaking” sound with every step—an enchanting natural phenomenon. From here, follow the receding tide past dramatic volcanic rock formations sculpted over thousands of years. The terrain is mostly flat, but you will cross shallow waters and rocky stretches, where the water can reach knee level depending on the tide.

At the end of the shore awaits the mysterious Sea Cave, revealed only during these exceptional low-tide windows. Here you will have plenty of time to soak in the breathtaking views and capture unforgettable photos. To make the moment even more special, enjoy a freshly prepared sandwich and a warm cup of coffee right by the cave—an exclusive dining spot that exists only when the sea allows.

“Walking the hidden coastline to the sea cave felt like discovering a secret world.”
